Lisa Ray Ceremonial Algonquin Mask Native American Leather Feathers Fur Skull

This mask comes from my personal collection, I have collected Native American art since the 1970's.  This mask has been in my possession since 1993 when I purchased it directly from Lisa Ray.  The mask is covered in tan leather.   It has porcupine quills and hand painted antelope running below the eye across the nose and up on to the forehead.  She broke the eye bone on that side of the skull to show the painted antelope.  Snake bone vertebrae are mounted under the eye on the left side.  A skull is mounted on the forehead with a piece of turquoise and crystal mounted on it.  The fringe hanging from the bottom of the face ends in a large Devil's Thorn.   A fur surrounds the mask, my best guess is its coyote or raccoon.  Various feathers including Golden Pheasant, Turkey, Peacock and McCaw adorn the crown of the mask.  There is black horsehair in among the feathers.  Four leather wrapped wool lengths hang down the left side.  Green moss was used on the reverse at the base of the feathers.  There is no signature, but again, I purchased it directly from Lisa Ray, and it is distinctively Lisa Ray.  Many of Lisa's masks have personal family meanings.  The fur and skull may have been caught by a family member.  The feathers may have come from a hunt.  The horsehair may have come from a favorite horse.  Everything is symbolic of a family history.

A resident of Spokane, Washington, Lisa Ray is an artist who creates masks using materials including feathers, fur, rawhide, beads and other objects to depict items from her native Algonquin Shawnee heritage. She specializes in quill and beadwork as well as the preparation of furs, skulls and skins.
In her work, Lisa Ray reflects her own Native American Heritage and has also studied the traditions of other North American Tribes over the past 15 years. She utilizes symbolic elements from these various cultures in a contemporary style and through artistic mediums to convey Native American tradition and history.
